2011 MISSISSIPPI RIVER CLEANUP PROJECT (Pool 5)
June 11th, 8am to Noon
Lunch Following At Alma's Dairyland Power Boat Landing

Millions of tons of trash end up in our nation’s rivers and streams every year.  Join your local community for a cleanup of Pool 5 of the Mississippi River, learn about the islands below Lock & Dam 4 and make a difference in the environment.

Wings Over Alma is partnering with the
Great Alma Fishing Float
in their annual clean up of the Mississippi River banks below Lock & Dam #4.  In 2010 the clean up project had 50 volunteers with 8 boats and they worked from island to island collecting everything that floated or washed up during the spring floods.

The clean up project covers the Wisconsin and Minnesota sides of the Mississippi River below Lock & Dam #4 in Alma, Wisconsin for about 2 miles.  This year we are adding a clean up site at Belvidere Slough in Buffalo City.  Dairyland Power Company has donated dumpsters and experts from the US Fish & Wildlife Service as well as the Wisconsin and Minnesota Departments of Natural Resources will be participating.

Meeting Sites:  Volunteers should meet at Alma's Dairyland Power Boat Landing or Buffalo City's Belvidere Slough Boat Landing (located at the north end of Buffalo City along County Highway 00).  Collection will occur from both landing sites.

Coordination:  You do no need a boat to participate.  However, bring a boat if you have one.  Non-boaters will be paired with boaters.  After arrival, register with the collection area coordinator.  You will receive a map with an assigned collection area and garbage bags.  Dumpsters will be placed at each landing.

Safety:  Please wear appropriate attire.  Leather gloves, long pants, long sleeved shirts and boots are suggested.  If you are bringing a boat please inspect your boat and safety equipment prior to arrival, including life vests.  Participants under the age of 18 need parent or guardian permission.  Keep in mind that cleanup work is performed in wet and muddy areas with embankments, you may encounter poison ivy and oak. Be cautious, you may be exposed to glass or metal objects that are sharp.

Lunch and Prize Drawing:  An appreciation lunch will follow at Alma's Dairyland Power Boat Landing.  There will also be a drawing held for door prizes.
